JPA PinGolf Fall 2010 Tournament
begins September 8th
Sep 4th

Spring 2010 JPA season starts on September 8, 2010.
The PinGolf Final will happen one week after the end of the JPA League season.
The JPA PinGolf Tournament is WPPR certified! All players who participate will receive
World Pinball Ranking Points depending on how well they finish. You can be ranked among the best pinball players in the world!
A new season of the JPA PinGolf Tournament will run in conjunction with the JPA League starting September 8th. Last season, I was able to give away $300.00 in prize money and, of course, I hope that the pool will be larger this season. For more information about the way the tournament runs, what games are used, and how you can sponsor the tournament, go to the JPA PinGolf Tournament page.
JPA Fall Season begins September 8th
Sep 4th

The 24th Season of the Jersey Pinball Association is set to begin on Wednesday, September 8th at Eight on the Break in Dunellen, New Jersey. Twenty people have already signed up to play this season. I am excited to see that former PAPA president and current IFPA official, Steve Epstein is slated to compete. Our current champion is Jim Fordham from Springfield, NJ.
Here are the games that are currently at The Break:
- Star Wars: Episode 1 (not operational)
- FunHouse
- The Addams Family
- Big Brave
- Monster Bash
- Iron Man
- Johnny Mnemonic
- Lord of the Rings
- Demolition Man
Seasoned league players know about a certain row of seldom used, dead games that took up a lot of space in the room which housed the pinball machines. Well I am glad to report that those cabinets are now gone. In fact, they have been gone since the Jersey Pinball Open. At least now we will all have a little more room to breathe in there.
Pinball Magic: iPhone = tiny pinball machine!
Aug 28th

New Potato, who brought us the Jackpot Slots [App Store] game / accessory for the iPhone, has just released another such bundle for the iPhone and iPod touch — but this time around, the game in question is pinball.Pinball Magic is a gaming accessory that is intended to transform your iPhone or iPod touch into a realistic pinball machine, albeit a rather diminutive one. The pinball table-shaped accessory sports flipper buttons, a ball-launching plunger, a credit / select button,an animated LED backbox display, and foldable legs for easy transport. The device mates with your device’s 30-pin dock connector and delivers a pinball experience by way of New Potato’s free Pinball Magic [link] app.Game features, listed by the developer:Multiple classic and unique playboard layoutAdvanced multi-level and multiplayer competitionFour possible multi-ball modesEnd-of-ball and replay bonusesTilt detection, tilt warning and activationBall saverPinball Magic is currently available from Best Buy, online and at certain retail locations at a price of $39.99. And don’t bother downloading the game app if you don’t have the accessory — it won’t play at all.
- Jailbreak iPhone
- Shoehorn an installation of Visual PinMAME/Visual Pinball on it
- Put Jailbroken iPhone in Pinball Magic device
- Somehow get Visual PinMAME/Visual Pinball to work with Pinball Magic device

Last weekend the Profession & Amateur Pinball Association (i.e. PAPA) held their 13th annual World Pinball Championships and out of 406 players, seven stood victorious in their separate division. That includes the youngest Class B player in PAPA’s history, 12-year old Joshua Henderson from Plainfield, IL(pictured). Josh was ranked as the 51st top player in the world after an IFPA tournament in May and now he can add this win (along with a $3,500 cash prize) to his list of accomplishments. They have all of the scoring tables and winners listed on the PAPA website but so far media from the event is fairly sparse. The cash prizes they had available were quite good – the 1st place winner from the A division, Keith Elwin walked away with the title World Pinball Champion and $10,000 in cash. I know that there is a lot of focus on competitive video gaming around the world these days but pinball certainly can’t be ignored as it’s taken just as seriously.
UPDATE: Josh has put his winnings to good use already – by purchasing a NIB Spiderman pinball machine.

Spider-man. An excellent choice! Welcome to the A-division, Joshua! As far as the sparse media is concerned, I’m sure the journalism would pick up if the prize money increased magically. Not that I’m complaining in any way, of course. I’m just saying this is one reason why I need to hit the Mega Millions or Powerball lottery. Unfortunately, it may be “all about the money” to the general public, even if we Pinheads(tm) know otherwise. Hey, I even saw a $100,000 darts tournament on ESPN. ONE-HUNDRED-AND-EEEEIIIIIIGHTYYYYYY!!!
Speaking of which, pinball needs a catchphrase. Darts has that one-hundred-and-eighty thing that gets screamed by the fans. What kind of catchphrases could pinball have?
“Super Jack*Bot Winner”
A Jack*Bot Remix
Aug 21st
Most of the tracks that I create come from music that gets stuck in my head. I’ll keep thinking about it or humming it until I can get in front of a computer and compose it. The story behind this one? Well, I was playing Jack*Bot once in a busy arcade (Shout out to 8 on the Break!), and I went on a Jack*Bot spree from zero all the way up to getting a Mega Jack*bot in one multiball. During that run, I went into sort of a trance, much like being “in-the-zone,” where every flip I made was the correct one.
This remix is based off of the music I thought I was hearing during the multiball round. One day, I was finally able to install PinMAME successfully, and I heard what the music actually sounded like without the extraneous arcade sounds. I was pretty happy with what I had produced when I compared it to the actual music created by the talented Jon Hey. Of course, since it’s a remix, there are some embellishments that help to differentiate my track from the original. Anyway, here it is. Feel free to download it, if you like, by using the down arrow on the right side of the track.
PAPA | TX-Sector: Best game of the show (IMO)
Aug 20th
Great game, or greatest game?
For some odd reason, I could not stop playing this game at PAPA 13. I had never seen the game before, and I don’t remember what compelled me to put in that first token.
The gameplay is simple: There are a set of transporters that can warp your ball to another area of the playfield. Advance 10 “MEGA” Levels (not normal or even super levels), by hitting certain targets, to light the lock at any of the active transporters. Lock the ball to start 2-ball multiball.
I loved the music, the sound effects and the sound cues on this game. The fact that the volume of the game was set loudly didn’t hurt either. I hope PAPA keeps this game around for a long time. Could we possibly see this wild card of a game in a future classics tournament?
Reintegration complete!
PAPA 13 | Bowen Kerins, how did you make that save?!
Aug 18th
Starring: Bowen Kerins, The Addams Family pinball machine
Featuring: Sanjay Shah, Brian Dominy, Eden Stamm, and a host of enthusiastic Pinheads(tm)
(Please view the video in full screen and in 720p on YouTube to view the full deliciousness of this save.)
What we have here is one of the most amazing saves ever performed on a tight-tilt, tournament-level Addams Family pinball machine. The fact that it was done with the pressure of the PAPA A-Division Finals makes it even more unbelievable. Bowen made the ball do a Ninja Gaiden style triangle jump out of trouble and back into the inlane. For his next trick, he’ll pull a rabbit out of his hat (AGAIN?! ^_^).
Well done, Bowen!
Tremendous thanks and respect are due to Kevin, Steve, Dave, and all of the scorekeepers and volunteers who continue to make PAPA the premier pinball tournament event of the year.
PAPA 13 World Pinball Championships August 12-15
Aug 12th
PAPA 13 – The World Pinball Championships start August 12 and continues though the 15th. Players of all skill levels will be at the event. Will repeat champion Keith Elwin earn the three-peat? Some of the pinball players who I compete with will join me in the A division, either by choice, or because they made the B-division finals last year. I wonder how they will handle all of the weirdness that happens while playing the A-division machines.
Some examples from previous years:
- The Spider-Man pin where if you shoot the right loop too well or too fast, it will glance off of a little notch at the left loop exit and send the ball careening down the middle.
- The Shadow: See Spider-Man (Yes, the exact same thing!)
- The Cirqus Voltaire, where anytime you shoot the juggler lock, when the ball gets kicked out, it bounces off of the stupid Ringmaster target and goes SDTM. You can almost hear the game mocking you as it goes down the drain, slowly but surely.
- The Monster Bash where any shots to the middle hole have a high probability of going SDTM.
Want more horror? How about Attack from Mars with no outlane posts and lightning flippers?! I defy you to survive a spaceship hit or a missed lock ramp shot with that setup. I can only imagine what bastardization is going to happen with Iron Man. If the incline is too steep, and shots to the right ramp stop on a dime at the top and go SDTM at sub-light speed, there may be lots of harsh words screamed at random times. I’m talking F-bombs and S-bombs galore (not from me though… I’ll try hard to behave myself).
These examples are only from the A-bank , but I realize that crap happens the other divisions too. For instance, I’m glad I didn’t have to play Paragon in the B-division last year. I’m afraid to think of what happened with that difficult drain monster of a game.
I hope I can qualify for the playoffs this year. If not me, then at least someone who I know and play pinball with. We are going to have to band together, come up with some strategies for these games, and play some defense by knocking down some of the scores of the higher ranked players. One of us has to make it.
Also, don’t sleep on the Classics tournaments. There are lots of World Pinball Player Ranking (WPPR) points to be had in those two tournaments on Friday and Saturday. Especially since players from all divisions can participate. I received the bulk of my PAPA 12 WPPR points from one of last year’s Classics tournaments, and I think I’m getting better at handling the ball physics that happen in the older games.
Will this year’s mini-tournaments live up to the standards of previous years? The mini-tournaments are always fun to try. There is usually a one handed competition, a split-flipper competition, a two minute drill and more. Once there was a World Cup Soccer USA ’94 pin with the legs removed and with a soccer ball in a box wired to each of the flippers. In order to flip, you had to literally kick the soccer ball. This also meant, in order to to a double-flipper save, you had to jump to kick both soccer balls. Another fun mini-tournament was “Attack from the Back” where there were flipper buttons wired above and behind the Attack from Mars game for a different perspective on the action.
Well, good luck and fair play to everyone. I know that, along with trying to qualify, I’m going to have to try all of those obscure games that I won’t have the opportunity to play again… until PAPA 14 that is.
Play Pinball here, and Go to Jail!
Aug 10th
In Beacon, New York, pinball is still illegal! Fine of $1,000 per day or jail!
It’s ridiculous that this town would have and implement such an arcane law. I cannot understand the prejudice some people have toward pinball even now. For goodness sakes, pinball games are not slot machines!
The Retro Arcade Museum exhibits games from the 1950′s to the 1970′s as well as some rare arcade games. The worst part about the sudden closing of the museum is that the town has decided to enforce this law after the museum had been in business for 18 months. That means, at some point a year-and-a-half ago, the museum was able to get all the correct permits done, legally and in order. Why would a town look to shut down a legitimate business, especially in this economy?
