Jersey Pinball Association Gauntlet – Fall 2009 – Rule Sheet
Introduction
- The Gauntlet is a competition where players attempt to reach a target score/goal on a certain amount of pinball machines.
- Any player may participate in the Gauntlet during the League season on League nights (Wednesdays) either before or after League play or on another day if arrangements are made beforehand with a Gauntlet official.
- Each Gauntlet attempt requires a $5.00 entry fee.
- Only one player may attempt the Gauntlet at a time.
- Players may attempt the Gauntlet, as many times as they wish, up to and including the last day of the League season.
Winners
- The Gauntlet Champion is the player who reaches all the target scores/goals, using the least amount of time.
- The Gauntlet Champion receives 75% of all entry fees collected.
- The Gauntlet Runner-up is the player who reaches all the target scores/goals, using the second least amount of time.
- The Gauntlet Runner-up receives the remaining 25% of all entry fees collected.
- In the unlikely event of a tie, priority will be given to the first player who recorded the time.
- The same player cannot win both first and second place prizes. If a player who is already in first or second place improves their time, only the best time will be used.
Time Limit
- There will be a 20 minute time limit.
- If no player completes the Gauntlet in less than 20 minutes, the winner is determined as follows:
§ The Gauntlet Champion will be the player who completed the most target scores/goals.
§ The Runner-up will be the player who completed the second most target scores/goals.
- If the number of target scores/goals completed is equal, the player who is closer to achieving the remaining target scores/goals will receive the higher rank.
Timekeeper
- Only Gauntlet officials may serve as timekeepers.
- Players must have a timekeeper with them to track their progress.
- Gauntlet times will be entered in tenths of a second.
- Timekeepers can use any device that keeps time using at least tenths of a second measurement.
§ When a stopwatch is used, round the time to the nearest tenth of a second.
- It is the player’s responsibility to know the target score/goal for each game
- Players are allowed to ask the timekeeper what the target score/goal is.
- Timekeepers are allowed to tell players the target score/goal.
- Timekeepers do not have to alert players when they have passed the target score/goal.
- The clock stops as soon as the timekeeper sees that player has achieved all of the target scores/goals.
“Coin-Drop”
- Players must insert coins before playing a machine. The cost of playing each game is in addition to the Gauntlet entry fee.
- Players are responsible for their own coin-drop.
- Players may quit an attempt, at any point, if they feel they have no chance to make a significant gauntlet time.
- The player forfeits the entry fee and coin-drop up to that point.
Progression through the Gauntlet
- Players are allowed to attempt games in any order they wish.
- Players are allowed to move to another game at any time.
- Players may “buy-in” extra balls
- Gauntlet scores/goals for each machine must be completed in one game (i.e. getting 800 Million in one game and then getting 4 Jack*bots in another game is not valid).
Machine Settings
- Games may be played on normal, non-tournament settings.
- All extra balls may be played.
Special Circumstances
- If games are replaced during the season, the Gauntlet officials will assign a reasonable target score/goal for the new games.
- Score normalizing will be used.
§ The new game’s target score will be based on the replaced game’s target score.
§ All previous Gauntlet times remain in effect.
- All games must be in working order to attempt a Gauntlet.
- Working order means that a game operates well enough that it would be made available for League play.
- Note that this does not mean all games need to be in 100% perfect condition.
Malfunctions
- Certain deleterious events are considered part of the competition.
- These events include but are not limited to:
§ Coins not registering
§ Dropped coins
§ Players running out of coins
§ Tilts
§ Slam Tilts
§ Stuck balls that can be reasonably recovered via ball search or through nudging by the player.
>> In this case, a Gauntlet official may choose to stop the clock after the first ball search attempt
>> The clock would start again as soon as play resumes
- A Gauntlet official may cancel the Gauntlet attempt and refund the player’s entry fee if there is a severe reason that prevents the player from completing a fair attempt.
- These events include but are not limited to:
§ A machine suddenly shuts down during the attempt by no fault of the player
§ Ball searches and player nudging cannot return the ball to the player
§ A player is unable to insert coins into the machine due to the malfunction of all of its coin mechanisms.
Gauntlet officials are allowed to participate in the competition.
Decisions of the Gauntlet officials are final.
This rule sheet may be amended if warranted.
